**NEMESIS TO GO RECOMMENDS** ZOLA JESUS, THE HAXAN CLOAK @ CAMP Basement, City Rd, 20.00, £6.50adv
'Zola Jesus comes from the American midwest, although her influences seem to derive from an entirely different place. She deals in swooning ambiences that make the Cocteau Twins sound positively jaunty: her single 'Night' sounds like Siouxsie staring into an existential abyss. There's something starkly compelling about her bathed-in-blue-light orchestrations, and her opera-trained vocals should ensure that the live experience packs a punch - especially as she's playing very small venues on this, her first UK visit. Tonight's venue, the basement bar of the City Arts And Music Project (Camp, geddit?) should brim with her delicious bleakness.'

**NEMESIS TO GO RECOMMENDS** OFFSET FESTIVAL featuring (a brief and random selection from the full bill): EIGHTERS MATCHBOX B-LINE DISASTER, THESE NEW PURITANS, CHARLES DE GOAL, CLUSTER, KAP BAMBINO, FACTORY FLOOR, O.CHILDREN, LIQUID LIQUID and many more, bands are still being booked @ Hainault Forest Country Park, gates open 11.30am Saturday, 10.30am Sunday, £65 weekend ticket with camping; £55 weekend ticket without camping. One-day tickets available at £29. These are 'Earlybird' prices - tickets will get more expensive as the festival approaches. Latest line-up and all other details on the Offset website: www.offsetfestival.co.uk
'With a policy of booking the creative, left-field bands that mainstream festivals might overlook, Offset manages to be cooler and edgier than other events on the Summer festival circuit - but it still retains that essential festival vibe of a big, good-humoured shindig in a field. This year the line-up features everything from the space-rock ambiences of Cluster to the brusque post-punk angularity of Charles De Goal; not something you're likely to get on the play-it-safe corporate-fest circuit. But the boisterous rumbustious rock of Eighties Matchbox is in there, too, proving that Offset is never too precious to party.'

Ryan McPhun (their prime mover) has the kind of voracious musical mind that cites as equal influences ’80s/’90s New Jack Swing and modern Angolan kuduro, Fleetwood Mac and Britney Spears, Brazilian tropicalia and Argentinean cumbia. He’s the kind of diligent, meticulous soul that spends days hunched over a laptop in a tiny rented studio in Auckland, NZ just to perfect a sequenced drum track (mission accomplished).' These are songs where the vulnerability of pop with its heart on its sleeve engages in a double-dutch jumprope match with the euphoric surrender-to-the-weird that is essential to psychedelia.
